Jonathan Sumption - Trials of the State.

Politics hey? And the law? The bane of our lives? Or necessary organs of a progressive and tolerant society?

In this, our latest book of the week, Jonathan Sumption opens the debate on what the role of law ought to be in a representative democracy.

Elegantly probing the concept of the expanding empire of law and why we now seek legal solutions to previously political problems.

Sumption is ever engaging, his prose crisp and his arguments in keeping with his judicial reputation and fact rather than philosophy driven.

Of course, it is all open to interpretation and there is much to discuss and perhaps dis/agree with, but, if looking for a quick primer – and who isn’t – on our changing political dynamic and our unwritten constitution’s role in law then this is a must.
